Salary and financial benefits

1. Salary
It is important for you to know you will have the same rights, salary and benefits as Dutch nurses and caregivers.
Your basic salary depends on your experience, diploma and the amount of hours you work. The basic salary is between 2.000 to 3.500 euro per month (36 hours a week).

On top of your basic salary you can also get additional allowances. These allowances are granted when you work in the weekend or between 8 pm and 7 am (122-160% extra per hour).

You are also entitled to vacation pay, this is 8% of your basic annual salary and is usually paid around may. The money you can use for whatever you want, it does not need to be used for a holiday. Depending on your travel distance to work you are also entitled to receive commuting expenses from your employer.

2. Benefits from government
Depending on your income, living situation and household you are entitled to a certain amount of benefits from government. It is possible you are entitled to all benefits, you do not need to choose.

a. Health insurance
A health insurance is obliged when you live in the Netherlands. To cover the costs of a health insurance you are entitled to receive a benefit from the Dutch government. The requirements for healthcare benefit are:

  • You are at least 18 years of age and have a dutch health insurance;
  • You have the nationality of an EEA country and if you are from another country you need a valid residence permit or work permit;
  • Your (combined) income and capital are not too high.

b. Rented house
When you rent a home in the Netherlands you can apply for a rent benefit to cover the costs of your rent. The requirements for rent benefit are:

  • You are at least 18 years of age;
  • You rent independent accommodation;
  • You, your possible benefit partner, and co-occupants are registered at your home address in the Netherlands;
  • You have the nationality of an EEA country and if you are from another country you need a valid residence permit or work permit;
  • Your rent, (combined) income and capital are not too high

c. Child benefit

Children up to the age of 18
When you have children up to the age of 18 that live with you, you can apply for child benefit. This is a contribution towards the costs of your children. Usually this is paid every quarter. All the info can be found on the website of SVB (Sociale verzekeringsbank)

Supplementary child benefit
Next to this you may also be eligible for supplementary child benefit. This is not granted through the SVB but through the Dutch tax authority. The requirements for supplementary child benefit are:

  • You have 1 or more children below the age of 18;
  • You receive Dutch child benefit from the SVB. Or you contribute towards the living expenses of your child;
  • You, your possible benefit partner, and co-occupants are registered at your home address in the Netherlands;
  • You have the nationality of an EEA country and if you are from another country you need a valid residence permit or work permit;
  • Your (combined) income and capital are not too high.

Childcare benefit
Does your child go to a childcare centre? Then you can apply for a childcare benefit. This is a contribution towards the costs of childcare. The requirements for childcare benefit are:

  • You have a job or you take part in a reintegration programme, a civic integration course or a training programme;
  • The childcare centre or childminding agency is registered. In case of childminding services, the childminder must be registered as well;
  • You concluded a contract with the childcare centre or childminding agency;
  • You pay the costs of the childcare;
  • You have the nationality of an EEA country and if you are from another country you need a valid residence permit or work permit.
